Gender Defines EVERYTHING Gender roles appear to be as outdated as time and also have undergone constant, but subtle sometime, revisions throughout generations. The whole story, “The Yellow Wallpaper,” is a good exemplory case of this. There are obvious divisions between genders. The protagonist and feminine antagonists of the tale exemplify the women of their own time; trapped in a submissive, controlled, and isolated domestic sphere, where they are treated as unstable and fragile children as the men dominate the general public working sphere. In the whole story, “The Yellow Wallpaper,” the role of a female in society is among domestic duties. Jeenie, the protagonist’s sister-in-law, is an excellent exemplory case of this. The protagonist is usually forbidden, by her hubby, to “work” until she actually is well again, so Jeenie methods in and assumes her domestic identity of a female and wife. The protagonist calls her “an ideal and enthusiastic housekeeper” and says she “hopes for no better profession” (Gilman 343).
