Amy Tan's "The Joy Luck Club" The "Joy Luck Club," from Amy Tan, is a set of short stories concerning the connections between Chinese created moms and their American born daughters. The story referred to as "Four Directions" is all about a woman named Waverly Jong. The story is about Waverly attempting to inform her mother that she is getting married to some American guy named Richard. Waverly was a chess champion as while she had been a young woman and she remembers the plan that she used in her matches, and also in her life, as she attempts to tell her mother on a marriage to an American man. Waverly's mom was increased in China under Chinese traditions. Waverly's mother wants Waverly to marry a Chinese guy and dos not need Waverly to marry an American man. Since Waverly brings us through her decision making process, she queries the Chinese customs which her mother just follows. Since Waverly climbed up in an American society, she has lost the Chinese customs that her mom has tried to educate her and therefore has weakened the connection between Waverly and her mum. As Waverly brings her mother through her home, Waverly enables her mom see the man items that are around to sign to her mother which she's living with a guy, like his garments around the sack and his barbells around the floor.
