It's 1975 and a fairly young girl with long dark hair parted in the middle is working in a convenience store. An attractive man in his mid-thirties walks , about six feet tall and with wavy brown hair. He offers her a grin and strikes up a conversation, where he is charming and charismatic. Little does she know that she is in deep trouble. His name is Ted Bundy, one of the worst serial killers of the twentieth century, and he has something for attractive young girls with long dark hair parted down the middle (Philbin 34). Serial killers come in many types. They vary from well-educated, articulate men and women, to people who've had nothing in existence. Psychiatric illness and unlucky life events often underlie the behavior of serial killers. Serial killers are distinct (and more dangerous) than ordinary offenders. Many murders are done out of passion, but serial killers simply kill for the joy of it. According to the FBI, a serial killer is a person who has killed a minimum of three individuals (Philbin 3), however, there are a lot more features that make someone be truly categorized as a serial killer. Based on Scott, the majority of the victims of serial killers are strangers and the killings appear random, and killers frequently choose victims who are vulnerable (Scott). Many serial killers have a "type," and their sufferers usually fit into that type. So what exactly causes someone to become a serial killer? Many indications point to features in the killer's childhood. According to Michael and Tom Philibin, "psychiatrists established that a serial murderer will have shown one or more particular behaviors in childhood: cruelty to animals, setting fires, and wetting the bed" (Philbin 8).
