Social networking has improved in popularity during the last twenty years and in effect narcissistic behaviour has increased in society(especially America's society) since the 1980's(Jayson 1). Studies show that the larger an individual is prone to narcissistic behaviour; there's a resulting increase in their own online social networking action(Mehdizadeh 357). Social networking sites or "SNSs" are defined as: "An online services that allow people to (1) construct a public or semi-public profile inside a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other customers with whom they share a connection, and (3) perspective and traverse their record of relations and those created by others within the machine"(Boyd, Ellison 1).) Narcissism can play a part in deciding to create a profile on a site such as Facebook although it is not a necessary personality trait to do so because some people only need to stay in contact with family members and close personal friends. The term "Narcissist" comes from the story of Narcissus, who had been penalized by Aphrodite, which makes Narcissus fall in love with his reflection in a reservoir of water wasting away and dying(Berens 163). In popular study of narcissism it is defined as "A pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and an exaggerated sense of self-importance"(Oltmanns 387). I was born pre-internet so one day once I have kids I'll blow their minds, telling them about how when I was a teen there was no such thing as social networking.
