This paper will explore the early instrument known as the chalumeau and the various sorts of instruments which have evolved from it. The chalumeau set of tools were folk instruments which were played using a single reed and the chalumeau itself is most commonly known as the predecessor to the modern-day clarinet. The tool has just eight tone-holes on its cylindrical bore. There are quite a few other single reed instruments that resemble the chalumeau and have been in existence during the exact same period of time. I'll be discussing the history of this chalumeau and its repertoire, similar tools of the moment, and the evolution from the chalumeau into the modern day clarinet. My resources will include scholarly articles from online databases, including Oxford Music Online, in addition to books written on the subject. Such resources include The Baroque Clarinet by Albert R. Rice and Some gentle on the Chalumeau from Edgar Hunt. Through this paper, I hope to shed more light on not only the set of instruments from the chalumeau household, but also the individuals who assisted to accommodate and alter the chalumeau itself, along with the specifics of those alterations to make that which we now see as the modern day clarinet. The instrument we know as the chalumeau, sometimes known as the baroque clarinet, is one reed instrument with seven holes to the fingers as well as a thumb hole on the opposite side of the tool (Lawson). It's often called a long pipe with a cylindrical bore similar to that of the recorder. The chalumeau came to being after many efforts to grow the amount of noise created by the recorders of the age.
