The parrot is really a stunning and smart bird. Mange is a festering disease that caused by parasitic insects that dig into the human body and results in unsightly sores and unremitting aggravation. Who or what exactly does The Mangy Parrot refer to? Is Mangy Parrot only Periquillo's nickname or can it be a metaphor for New Spain too? The parrot is emblematic of the lands and people of New Spain; the colonial authorities is the contested infecting the territory. Through the use of indigenous language, comedy and satire Fernández de Lizardi communicated his message via a multi-leveled story and thus prevented censorship. The serialized newspaper book allowed the narrative to get to the masses and encouraged discussion and disagreement over an protracted period of time. De Lizardi's unapologetic fictionalized first person accounts of life in New Spain exposed the corruption, abuse, prejudice and inequities in society brought on by the colonial caste system and encouraged public support for a revolution. Lizardi begins his narrative with the story of binding babies' hands. The previous women shuffle babies' hands simply because it had been done to them and consequently that made it the best policy and the old ways ought to be followed even when there is not any proof to support them.
