Giovanni's Room In James Baldwin's second novel published, we meet with a young American named David. He's left his home state to live in Paris. At the first meeting for this man, he gasped out a window and believes of his lifestyle. This early in the book we receive an impression of everything not being at its right location. This is where emptiness lives. As Davis starts to tell about his life as a young boy in the usa, he lets us know about his mother dying much too young, and him being elevated by his father and aunt. David's dad is stereotype of a man and their emotions. He along with his son never have a close connection. Even when David gets hurt in an collision, his dad doesn't want him to cry. He needs him to be a man, a manly guy and not a Sunday instructor. 1 summer day, David is hanging out with his buddy Joey. This ends up be David's first sexual encounter with someone else. The following day that he is very much embarrassed and fearful and slopes Joey, even though he's got strong emotions for him. When he begins school that autumn he starts hanging out with new people, begins to drink and date women. This is when the deceit begins. Somewhere along the road, David decides to depart for Paris. He's tired of imitating his father's manly conduct and runs out of the problem he's refusing to admit. In this new country, David meets Hella, a fellow American who, like itself, and it is searching for a meaning in life. He tries so tough to match what is expected of him as a man and an American, and he makes the decision to suggest to this woman who he sees interesting and exciting.
