Hinduism is the major religion in India and Nepal with 900 million followers worldwide. 80 percent of the population in India is Hindu, which makes it the major religion of the country (BBC, 2009a). Hinduism started at the Indus River Valley in modern day Pakistan about 4000 decades back (United Religion Initiatives Kids, 2002). Unlike many other religions, it doesn't have a single founder, no single scripture, without a single group of teachings: its teachings vary and are based off of many different characteristics and holy books. Hinduism is a polytheistic religion. The faith carries a various number of beliefs, which only some could be practiced. With the high number of teachings, sacred books, and beliefs, Hinduism has been viewed as a means of life instead of a religion (BBC, 2009a). As stated earlier, Hinduism is a means of life rather than a faith. Hinduism is a guide for life, with an ultimate goal to achieve union with Brahman (A History of World Societies, 2012). Though there might be millions of gods, many followers believe that there is only one supreme being. Brahman could be seen as the ultimate being or as god, but beliefs differ from person to person. While beliefs can fluctuate, Brahman is usually considered the power that affirms everything. Unlike other religions, Hindus do not worship Brahman, or their ultimate being. Many believe that god is unlimited and might exist in many different forms and expressions (Flood, Hindu Concepts, 2009). The final goal of Hinduism is to achieve moksha, the launch of a person’s spirit out of samsara, or reincarnation. Samsara is a never ending cycle of life, death, and reincarnation (Berkely Center for Peace, Religion, and World Affairs, n.d.).
