Summary of James Hilton's Goodbye, Mr. Chips James Hilton’s novel Goodbye, Mr. Chips may be the tale of an English schoolmaster who dedicated his whole adult life teaching youthful boys. He was a shy person somewhat. He was a reliable school teacher nevertheless, attractive and professional in lots of different ways. Although his first teaching experience had not been successful, he was determined to become good schoolmaster. After arriving at Brookfield, he started to warm-up to his college students. After teaching 25 years at Brookfield, Chips was unmarried still. Everyone thought that he'd never get married because he previously passed the most common marrying age. But, he did marry and it just happened under unusual circumstances. He went on a vacation to the Lake district of England and right now there, he met his long term wife, Katherine Bridges.
