William Faulkner's short novel, The Bear "The Bear" is a short book in an anthology that starts in Yoknapatwpha County sometime after the Civil War. The story deals with loyalty, honor, truth, braveryand courage, anxiety, character, history and choices. Cleanth Brooks greatest explained this story by stating, "Faulkner's villains don't respect nature and their fear of this has nothing whatsoever in common with the dread of their Lord or with amazement at the presence of the divine." (Brooks 149) In the narrative, we find a stand that's learned to outwit and live hunters for several years. It was only when they shot a monster of the wild and tamed it until they could even come close to the bear. They took a monster of character to kill a beast of nature to their own personal pleasure, for sport...a conversation piece. When looking into the background aspect of the narrative, consider human actions and the way folks make radical decisions that may affect the remainder of their lives, or perhaps the lives of the others, not even giving a second thought to the consequences. This book deals with a revolutionary conclusion made by one man that altered the lives of the many. The author of the story, William Faulkner, was a white southern male created "September 25, 1897, in New Albany, Mississippi. He died July 6, 1962." (Compton's CD) Faulkner had a way with Christianity, but more with the essence of man. He believed that man was character.
