Katherine Mansfield's Her First Ball 1 At Katherine Mansfield's Her First Ball, Leila, the principal character is the eighteen-year-old woman from the rural country that has recently moved into town with extended family members. To Leila, everything was "so new and exciting" (4th paragraph) and she promptly begins her path from innocence to experience. I can empathize with her, however I do not feel sympathy for her.
