William Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi, in 1897. He wrote many different short stories, plays, and novels, including the timeless As I Lay Dying. This innovative book, printed in 1930, has a sense of dark humour and shock value. It's an unconventional narrative style, with 15 first person narrators. As I Lay Dying attributes The Bundrens, an incredibly bad family who reside on their farm at Yoknapatawpha County, a literary county in Mississippi. The family matriarch, Addie Bundren, dies early in the publication. The rest of the narrative is dependent on her family- her husband, Anse, and their five kids: Cash, Darl, Jewel, Dewey Dell, and Vardaman, along with their endeavor to fulfill her wish of being buried in Jefferson. They must transport her coffin onto a wagon across the county, a visit which takes a total of fourteen times. They encounter many obstacles during their trip, all while attempting to take care of the departure of their recently handed mommy. While the whole family goes to Jefferson for varying motives, it appears that Jewel is the driving force of this travel, which Darl does everything in his power to sabotage it. Jewel Bundren is your 3rd son of Addie, and that he is likewise the bastard child of Addie and minister Whitfield. Back in Addie’s monologue, she expresses that after giving birth to Cash and Darl, she believed unsatisfied with her life. She says “I understood that it was, perhaps not that my aloneness needed to be violated over and over daily, but that it hadn't been violated until Cash came” (Faulkner 172). She felt no romantic connection to Anse, which is when she began the brief affair with ministry Whitfield. Consequently, she got pregnant and gave birth to Jewel, knowing that Whitfield was his paternal dad. Later Jewel, she.
