Learning plays an essential part in life. We learn something new everyday. Back in Frank O'Connor's short story "The First Confession", Jackie, the principal character, finds a lesson he'll bear in mind. Following Jackie's first confession, he would now be convinced that he was not such a sinner, and that Nora, his sister, was wrong. While individuals focused on Jackie's own wrong doings, they weren't focusing on their very own wrong actions. Occasionally people's ignorance can bring them into an entirely different reality. Through certain characters and various incidents, O'Connor worries his subject that people's ignorance may blind them out of their own sins. The main character's sister in the story, Nora, was blinded by her own ignorance. She was very dishonest, but concealed everything behind an innocent appearance and pleasant smile. Each Friday her grandma would get retirement cover. She would suck up every penny she could in the grandma. She would pick on Jackie for her personal entertainment. As it was her turn for confession, she had been in and out in a matter of seconds. "Her eyes were lower, her head was bowed, and her palms were joined very low down to her belly, and she walked up the aisle into the side-by-side looking like a saint." (333).) All before this confession, Nora was torturing Jackie on the walk-in. She was really devious. She went from 1 personality to the other, covering up her evil doings. Her dishonesty was realized by the priest however. He was not fooled by her charm and devious ways. Nora had herself duped. She had been a sinner herself, however she believed herself a saint.
