American Beauty by Sam Mendes This essay has problems with formating & In American Beauty, 1999, directed by Sam Mendes, we're faced with the permeating images that have swallowed mainstream American life. Mendes exploits these pictures as structures that we made around ourselves as a way of hiding our true selves. Mendes can implicate us in the building and make us active viewers by exploiting our voyeuristic nature. In American Beauty Mendes employs the voyeuristic tendencies of this spectator to acknowledge the permeating assembled graphics. Mendes, through the use of narration, the mise en scene and cinematic techniques implicates the spectator into using their voyeuristic tendencies to deconstruct the pictures in order to show the real picture. By the start of the movie the construction of images is evident. American Beauty begins with the obvious constructed shot, shown via the use of a video camera, of a young teenage girl. The narration shows that she needs her daddy dead. The picture portrayed around her is assembled as a wicked, unaffectionate childhood. The following scene is of a high angle shot, with a voice-over narration. The voice-over goes on to describe this is Lester BurnhamвЂ™s talking and he's already dead and the next is a construction of the pertinent events. This scene retains relevance for 2 reasons. First it constructs a picture that the young adolescent in the last scene is that the killer. And as we'll learn by the end of the film this picture isn't all that it appeared to be. That is a reoccurring theme throughout the film, that these are constructed graphics, and to observe that there's more to this story then what seems on the surface. The high angle constituting chance of LesterвЂ™s street also holds importance for the spectator. This opening shot is very similar to that of Alfred HitchcockвЂ™s opening scene in Psycho. The similar themes is the spectators function as the voyeurs. In each we're looking to the personal sphere of the personality. Nonetheless, in American Beauty that our voyeuristic nature isn't shameful. The narration that accompanies the spectacle is allowing our voyeuristic needs to enter into the private lives without guilt or shame. Mendes as does Lester asks the spectator are the voyeur.
