As the English were just coming to Tsenacomoco situated on the eastern side of Virginia in Chesapeake Bay, the Virginia Algonquian speaking Indians called the Powhatan attacked from within the woods using arrows and bow. The Powhatan confederacy was ruled by one individual whom Helen Rountree describes as mamanatowick or вЂњGreat Kinge.вЂќ Chief Powhatan had weroance that had been in charge of tribes under his management. In English terms, a weroance means petty chief or commander. The weroance attained their name through matrilineal kinship. Most all of these were sons of Powhatan.
