First of all, he unites the narrator and the protagonist. Poe writes this narrative from the point of view of the murderer of the old guy. When an author creates a situation where the protagonist tells a private account, the general shock of the narrative is eloquent. The narrator, in this specific story, adds to the effect of terror by continually stressing to the reader that he is not angry, and tries to convince us of the reality by how closely this brutal crime was planned and implemented. . It's surprising, because the offenders frequently deny their crimes. The reader doesn’t understand a lot about the protagonist, perhaps not even his title or his sex, using just "I" and "me" with regard to his character. It could as well be a young guy or an old woman. While he tells his tale, the narrator uses a factual and cold tone. He uses a lot of language in regards with death and distress, as to create an atmosphere in which the reader could feel uneasy, like “Whenever it fell upon me my blood ran cold.” The narrator stresses the reader that he is not angry, and tries to convince him of that fact by showing how closely his crime was planned and executed. “ You fancy me mad.
