The significance of crucible is to 'purify something by heat or pressure'. It can be a reference to hell and the heat that it includes, as well as the strain there is about not moving there or being sent there to your sins. There are numerous characters within the play which could be 'refined', one of these being John Proctor. This can be the play's key character and plays the part of the tragic hero within it. He is fundamentally a good guy, but he has dedicated lechery so has this on his conscience for much of his lifetime. Towards the concept of his purification, Proctor redeems himself a the end of the drama as he refuse the chance for a pubic confession and retains his good name until his passing, his purification is at realising his flaws but upholding his honest and good nature, even though it's the reason for his departure. Miller's intentions for writing The Crucible have been to present a parody of this political climate of their afternoon to an audience, without immediately demonstrating the causes of their current day's disruptive political context. Miller made the play as an equal representation of the HUAC (House of Un-American Activities Committee) and also the manner by which the treated others and 'maintained' the law. Whilst performing this Miller had to be careful of the way he wrote the drama, as an immediate connection to HUAC could, make him look like a target for the business enterprise.
