Aspartame was discovered by James Shatter. He is a chemist in G.D Searle, which in which he accidently discovered aspartame. Aspartame is a chemical that is 180 times sweeter than sugar, but it has no calories. Of spring 1967, Searle begins to run security test for aspartame that's vital to get FDA approval. By collapse, a biochemist named Dr.Harold at the University of Wisconsin has an aspartame evaluation on infant monkeys. Without informing the Searle company first. The test results were also negative. Out of two monkeys, one expires and the other six dies from seizures. December 18, 1970 that the Searle Company lays out a food and safety plan for aspartame. The company thought this would give the FDA a positive perspective on the sugar. Spring 1971 a neuroscientist called Doctor John Olney, informs Searle that the aspartic acid caused holes in brains of infant mice. So far aspartame was not looking very good to anyone. February 1973, after spending ten million bucks doing security test for aspartame, Searle ultimately applies for the FDA approval. They turned in about one hundred studies to claim that aspartame is safe. On March 5, the first FDA scientist reports that the safety data sheet to get aspartame and stated that the information was incorrect. To get aspartame to be secure, more evaluation needed to be ran. May 1974, Searle Company had to go to court to show their data to be true. Searle attorney Jim Turner meets with the company’s representatives to talk about Drone dilemma with the safety information. Throughout July, the FDA provides aspartame their first approval to be used in food that is dry. August 1974, Jim Turner and John Olney file arguments together with the acceptance aspartame.
