A major battle from the United States' history is the American Civil War. Many causes Resulted in the Civil War. This all occurred around the mid 1800s. It was a battle between the Northern and Southern states. Both sides had their own view on slavery, and also their distinct perspectives caused contentions between them both. Both had different views on whether to expand or stop slavery growth into the West, or have slavery in any way. The largest cause was a social difference between slave and anti-slave nations. Also, the development of the abolition movement added to the chaos. Most importantly would be the land gained from the Mexican War, and what should be done with the land gained. To attempt to resolve the conflicts over the property, congress kept making compromises. The first major compromise was that the Missouri Compromise, which was an imaginary line across the thirty-six and thirty degrees latitude. Anyone above was a free country and anybody below was a slave state. However, when new lands were added to the usa, people did not want slavery to expand and created the Wilmot Proviso which prohibited slavery in new territories. This outraged many individuals so they then chose to permit slavery to be set in every state by popular sovereignty. But with this thought came threats for people to vote for one side, and caused lots of struggles in Kansas, hence, the Bleeding Kansas. All this societal problems contributed to the Civil War. Another big contributor to the Civil War would be the economic differences between the North and the South. The inventor Eli Whitney created the cotton gin.
