When I first picked this book up looking at the comic style cartoon on the cover my first initial thought was that it had been only a different children's introduction to problems in the surroundings type publication, but as I began to see it this book is turning out to be much more than that. Chapter one begins with the puzzle of the sculptures on Easter Island in which the couple people lived a massive presence on the scarce resources that they had available. The island was covered in large stone statues that were erected from the first individuals to come past centuries past. Research shows that these early settlers depends upon an abundance of natural resources including trees. Besides the trees cut down for housing, it appears that the very first colonizers cut trees down just so that they might move these large monuments into position. The trees have been used up until none remained. The writer then describes the idea of the water cycle and also the important role that trees play inside.
