The story of "The Lottery" is a dark story that provides the reader a window into a neighborhood blighted by a tradition instills by ignorance; sending a message which reverberates with several events, thoughts, and observations through the annals of time. Written by the great Shirley Jackson, this fable illustrates how delusion and ridiculous thinking led to the frightening and morose end of Tessie Hutchinson's presence. Shirley Jackson was well known within her life, but not necessarily as the literary ace she's hailed as now. Jackson had great fascination with the culture of witchcraft, and deeply integrated this understanding into one of her very first short stories: "The Lottery." Although this influence significantly improved the haunted tone of the story, it also spawned various rumors concerning Shirley Jackson himself, being a reclusive bookish girl interested in the dark artwork. However, just as the "witches" of Salem were mercilessly murdered for ambiguous motives, so also was Tessie Hutchinson. Shirley Jackson watched the manifestation of those bad spirits within our own lives, and steered their sorrowful character to a meticulous story that is as moving as it's disturbing. This easy short story bleeds in the minds of its readers, and combines to our perception of the world we know today. Finally, the reader starts to join the idea process and ideologies of the mentally deranged villagers inside the story to those who exist or existed within the real world. We start to peel away at our very own society, and observe that the same method of thinking which spawned these lotteries, held within the fictional universe, could have counterparts in the actual world, that's the truly perturbing fragment of the narrative.
