The Search for Truth in Plato's Allegory of the Cave along with Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio The publication Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson has many topics that present themselves during the book. 1 such recurring motif is a search for truth. The figures in the publication don't fully realize that they're looking for reality, but they do believe a vague, "indescribable thing" that pushes and prods their heads into actualize a higher plane of thought. This search for a high plane by the figures of Winesburg nearly parallels another literary work of early Greek origin- Plato's "Allegory of the Cave," which is a part of his writing "The Republic." I contend that the town of Winesburg is the equivalent of the Cave in Plato's writing. The "Allegory of the Cave" is an attempt by Plato to relate his ideas and philosophy on human civilization into common terms. He considered that there are two planes of life: that the material world of their senses, along with a greater world of ideas and ideals. Plato's "Allegory" made it feasible for individuals to more rigorously grasp a somewhat subjective concept. Even the "Allegory" depicts numerous folks who are imprisoned in a cave, chained by the legs and throat so that they cannot move, nor will they turn their heads; they see only towards the rear wall opposite the cave opening.
