The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, a four-act remarkable play based on events of the Salem witchcraft trials, also takes place in a tiny Puritan village of Massachusetts in 1692. The witchcraft trials grew out of the specific moral system of the Puritans, which promoted a repressive code of conduct which frowned on any diversion from norms of behaviour. The drama opens with the reader finding out about a young woman who is inert in her mattress. The villagers automatically suspect witchcraft. However, they don't understand that each of the women in the village sneaked out to the woods the night before in which they left a potion to allow them to have the man they love. The black servant who helped the women make this potion has been Tituba. It was nice till Abigail went too much and wished death on the spouse of John Proctor. The girls went crazy, dancing and stripping but afterward Abigail's uncle walks in and finds them. Here is the real reason the woman is not able to move, fear. The girls turn on the rest of the village and blame them for the witchcraft. John Proctor is the tragic hero since he has many positive attributes about him, such as his imperial characteristics and his honorable and righteous attributes. He also has a darker side to his otherwise pure character by having an affair with Abigail Williams. Proctor’s activities result in his eventual deadly downfall and the downfall of others as a consequence of his sin. The more shocking truth is that these events were factual, that only further fuels the catastrophe of the play, particularly towards John Proctor. The characterization of both Proctor, and also the crucial scenes where his isolation is apparent, develop the audience’so mindset towards him from one of misgiving to admiration and recognition as a tragic hero.
