What keeps mankind alive? Answer the question with regards to the actions of character types in The Threepenny Opera. In The Threepenny Opera, Bertolt Brecht, through the writing of the song “Second Threepenny Finale What Keeps Mankind Alive” in Scene Six, gives us the theory that “mankind is kept alive by bestial acts (page 55, line number 18). For me, although the theory to associate humans with beasts, or more specifically, human being behaviour with “bestial acts” looks peculiar, some individuals, in their quest for desires and wants, perform reflect an inhuman nature, making them ‘beast-like’. In the play, we are able to start to see the constant, uncontrollable longing of “food” (page 55 # 9 9) of some personas. For me, what the lyricist refers as “food” here's not the physical chemical for feeding on or drinking, but things that one mainly desires instead. Throughout the play, we are able to see from the exemplory case of Macheath how his sexual urges matter a lot more than any other activities in his life: although he knows obviously that “a woman’s skirts are what he must resist” (page 40), he always does not do so “the moment night falls” (page 40). Furthermore, his “sexual obsession” (web page 40) is indeed extreme that even through the critical days when he's wanted by the authorities, he keeps on turning up in the whorehouse and flirting the whores by praising the “nice underwear [that] [they] [possess] got” (web page 42) As reflected in the lyrics of the track, “food” is, for several characters, to be “sorted away” (page 55, line #3 3) to the “basic, first position” (page 55, line #3 3) in one’s lifestyle to ensure that “food is the very first thing [to] [them]”, “[while] morals follow on” (page 55, #9 9).
