Throughout the publication, Mona in the Promised Land, the main characters are facing stereotypes that they cannot control. Stereotypes in society form how people are perceived. Everyone deals with their stereotype's in a different way. The two characters that cope with the many stereotypes are Mona, and Barbara. According to their stereotypes, Barbara is a better all around man than Mona, as a result of her social class, however when it comes to coping with stereotypes Mona is a far stronger person. Like all people, Mona and Barbara choose to deal with their stereotypes in different ways. Mona chooses to take care of her stereotypes by trying to change them , while Barbara deals together by shifting herself. One of the first stereotypes which Mona is watch to in her life is when she misbehaves. Whenever Mona doesn't mind her manners her mother will snap at her, "You be a fantastic Chinese woman." Mona recognizes that as a stereotype if her mum says it. She informs her mother, "I am not Chinese, I am American" By telling her mum that she is an "American" girl, which implies to her mum that she is free to make her own conclusions, Mona is trying to modify the "Chinese" girl stereotype. This shows that Mona is a strong person willing to fight stereotypes. Barbara Gugelstein is Jewish. It's brought up nearly every time Barbara is discussed in the publication.
