A symbolist of the past due 1800’s, the abstracted functions of Odilon Redon include a feeling of mystery and somberness that accentuate the connections they need to their traditionally darker designs. A “prince of dreams” and a “creator of nightmares,” Redon’s works have already been known for his or her expressive later, whimsical colors and exclusive abstract design. The Cyclops (circa 1898), a painting from Redon’s works, is a prime exemplory case of such experienced crafting and in ways was the stepping rock towards his signature vibrant pastels and paintings. If one had been to examine Redon’s old body of work, it could give them a much better knowledge of how this artist came into being his meticulous concepts and the way the Cyclops was in ways, a prototype to Redon’s future functions. The Cyclops can be an oil painting on solid wood dated circa 1898, and is portion of the Kröller-Müller Museum’s collection. The painting’s theme references Greek literature of the unrequited wishes of the Cyclops Polyphemus towards the ocean nymph Galatea. In the composition, the Cyclops stands in the backdrop overlooking the number of a female laying in the foreground. The use of impasto and wide ranges of color are dominant in this piece, creating contrasts between your subjects and their environment. The two numbers are related through the use of yellow and precious metal pigments against the predominantly blue environment that halos them, however they are separated by the solid band of purple that divides the painting; it’s as though a visible barrier denies the Cyclops’ feelings.
