Freshman learning communities (FLC) are applications where 15 to 30 first-year pupils register for many general-education classes that concentrate on a frequent subject (Jaffee, 2004). Although there are several distinct kinds of learning communities, they all are created for the very same purposes. Among the main purposes in executing freshman learning communities is to help the pupils in their transition to another environment. This acclimation involves becoming more familiar with the other students, faculty members, campus culture, and academic expectations. But, with freshman learning communities also come negative facets. Both facets have to be assessed to determine whether trainee learning communities are effective. The greatest benefit in engaging in freshman learning communities is the opportunity to interact and socialize with a group of students known as a cohort. Lichtenstein (2005) noted that these programs are based on the assumption that the greater the studentвЂ™s social involvement in the life of the college, the greater chance for academic achievement. Does this cohort of pupils assist in lessening the anxiety of the transition, but also gives pupils the social support needed to successfully advance through college (Engberg, 2007). Because of the small size, pupils are given a higher chance of engaging, discussion, and overall getting to know one another. Students in learning communities not only tend to create their own support groups that go beyond the classroom, but also spend more time together out of class (Tinto 2000).
