Before the invention of the world wide web, we would have to call one store after another to try to get the best price on a significant purchase. When we did purchase something, it wasn't from the convenience of our house. We stood in line at the bank throughout "bankers' hours". In terms of locating information, we either didn't find the info we wanted or did so only through great effort and expenditure. We also were isolated as individuals due to the barriers of time and distance. Overall, it is apparent that the internet has gained society by allowing for easier communication and access to data. Specifically, communication and availability of data has been eased through the use of : the various forms of: networking; the web; and plugins. Networking is one of the chief ways the internet has benefitted society in its quest for simpler communication and access to additional data. Through networking, users such as researchers and professors can share files in order to collaborate on a job. An example of such cooperation are found at the Human Genome Project. With this project, international scientists and researchers used each other's information in order to "map", or ascertain the gene sequence, of an individual's DNA and thus boost efforts to find cures for specific diseases. The first instance of media has been in August of 1962 when J.C.R. Licklider of MIT described what was called a "Universal Network" notion (Cerf). The Universal Network was a globally interconnected set of computers through which everyone could quickly access data and programs from any location.
