An obsession exists on the planet today based solely on the use of scapegoats. According to the dictionary, a scapegoat consists of someone or group designed to bear the blame for other people or to suffer in their own place. Some of the most influential scapegoats consist of Jesus Christ taking suffering because of the sins of civilization, the Jewish people being punished for the issues in Germany, and more lately the U.S. citizens that died at 9/11 being punished for its sins of America. Scapegoats have come in many forms over time and have been very damaging. The use of scapegoats in our society, like in Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery", has proved to be damaging, and a conclusion has to be discovered as a way to seek peace. Scapegoats appear abundant in the world these days. Political parties and businesses consistently seem to find a person or small group which takes the blame for serious troubles. This may result in problems and arguments that sometimes lead to something similar to wars. Scapegoats are simply a way of passing blame off of oneself and on to others, simply so reputations can remain intact. This sort of mindset shows how lethargic the world is now, where people do not even take accountability for their own actions. Lots of people from older generations whine about how many of the new generations become too comatose and reluctant to undertake their own activities and indiscretions. With attitudes such as this, peace won't ever be found and will inevitably lead to conflict. Something must be done to stem the flow of scapegoats that have been used far a lot with time.
