Representation of New York at Manhattan and Gender and the City Manhattan, the town of New York, is often depicted in the media by pictures of skyscraper buildings and yellow taxis. I will analyse the representation of New York by looking at and comparing the introduction sequences of this show "Sex and the City" using the film "Manhattan". I will be looking especially at how the directors achieve their requirements of New York by the images of New York as well as the cinematic apparatus that they use. Both directors have a similar idea of portraying New York as a city of two halves but they both have different ways of doing so. John Thomas, director of "Sex and the City", uses a range of cinematic devices including camera shots, pace, editing and a few images and stereotypes to show Carrie as a gimmick for New York. From the first couple of frames of the clip Carrie is at a close up shot with the backdrop round her blurred and not in attention. The focus here is to Carrie's emotions; she is positive, relaxed and happy that reflects the bold bright and vibrant side to New York. The clip is split into 2 halves, separated by a shot at the middle of maneuvering through the centre of a traffic jam by a very low angle looking up. Although this is quite an odd shot and could also signify New York as appearing on Carrie as being intimidating and mysterious revealing another hand to New York itself, to me it reveals a journey back to reality from the stereotypical side of New York representing a change or a definitive border between the 2 parts of New York.
