"Roberta, you will never get into Princeton University!" Said my uncle, who laughed as I exited his vehicle. I never thought I would hear these words come out of my "favorite" uncle. When he told me this, I had many emotions going through my head. At that instant I felt angry with myself and him because at that moment he made me feel as though I was nothing. Where has been that the faith in me and my skill? This man is my uncle, one who is supposed to be my support system. My uncle works for the government as a journalist. He's a very intelligent man, but is famous for being arrogant and greedy. He neglects, to make negative comments regarding my father's level of education and my mother's job status. Because he is gainfully employed and has more education than my mom does not make him "better." My father has not lived in exactly the same home as me because my freshmen year of highschool. This gives my uncle the opportunity state that the absence of my dad is people battle. In addition, he believes that my brother and I'll follow in his footsteps: We won't be successful. This story is important because black women are now being stereotyped as single parents with children, who don't amount to anything. I picked this story because it shows how relatives can negatively influence people more than strangers. Being part of the experience challenged me to become a better person. It made me rethink who I'm, while simultaneously working to prove my uncle incorrect. Completing this job will allow me to hear person's stories about growing up in single parent households and beating struggles despite the odds.
