The Absolutely Accurate Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie and Bastard out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison, tell stories of troubled teens and their desire to live a life more meaningful than the one society had given for them. On the outside, Junior and Bone appear very different but when they're examined through the topics of discrimination, poverty, and friendship, these two protagonists become reflections of each other. This paper will compare the conflicts faced by the figures and the consequences of social inequality on their lives. The battle to climb above the opinions of the others was one of the most important issues both Junior and Bone fought to conquer. In the instance of Junior, racial discrimination was a constant reminder that he belonged to a low social group. His identity as Native American was a good enough reason for people of other races to look down to him. Stereotypes asserted Native Americans were lazy, uneducated alcoholics that did not tried to conquer poverty. Due to the decades of jealousy that led from stereotyping, the Indian characters in this book have a solid sense of hopelessness. The inhabitants of the reservation recognize that it is simpler to accept injustice instead of face the hardship that includes hard their offenders. If Junior asks his parents that types of folks have the most expect, with no hesitation they inform him "white individuals." (p. 45). Throughout the book, Junior remarks on the simple fact that the white individuals belong to the most prestigious nightclubs, maintain the highest paying occupations, and attend the best colleges.
