Geoffery Chaucer wrote his legendary Canterbury Tales in Medieval times when women were considered as servants for their husbands and powerless. This is a time where church and state were one thing and in the church's eyes women were assumed to be both gentile and also virtuous. Sexuality and instruction of girls was condemned by the church and state. The clothes during that time also represented the ideals of that moment. Their skirts were long and ankles were never to be shown naked in public. Young women were taught that a fulfilled life comprised marrying a rich and noble person, staying at home taking care of the kids and being in tune with a lifestyle that the church praised. Chaucer wrote his female characters to represent the women he had come into contact with. The virtuous and beautiful girls came into play in the Franklin's and the Doctor's stories. In these stories, the girls that are the key characters are kind, beautiful and what that the church believed a woman ought to be. These women showed their virtuousness by choosing death over being morally stained or losing their family honor. Although Chaucer had these sort of girls represented in his stories, he had been a radical writer. He criticized the church, Medieval society along with other ordinary figures he encountered in his travels. The most radical story that Chaucer is now written, as far as women are concerned, is The Wife of Bath's Tale. The main character in this tale, which is really a girl, actually holds the power over her husband. Although Chaucer composed of the people of the time, his narrative of a girl holding electricity is extremely radical during the time that he had composed it. In the Physician's tale, a knight called Virginius includes a gorgeous and kind girl named Virginia. There was a judge called Appius who all cost wanted to attain the fourteen year-old Virginia.
