Anywhere you turn society has been exhibited with pictures of devotion, beauty, or sexuality. A few of those pictures signify unrealistic or unreachable expectations and may be extremely detrimental. It is common to see women used in reality TV shows and music videos. Young girls are also affected by the images that they see in advertisements, billboards, web websites, and pictures. These pictures serve to harm a woman's self confidence and also are impacting their overall health. Today's mass media messages have a negative effect on how women perceive themselves. In the paragraphs below, I am going to outline three research articles relating to this topic. The first article is called: The Effects of the Media on Body Image by Amanda J. Holmstrom. This article suggests the concept that the media's depiction of a lean body image can lead woman to think they ought to meet this ideal aim. She describes in detail three concepts which make a positive correlation regarding the affects of media on body image. The initial and the most common of the 3 concepts is Festinger's social comparison theory. Festinger says that individuals evaluate themselves through comparison with other people and therefore are more likely to compare with people like them.
