Women from the Math World Works Cited Not Contained Math is commonly known as the person's major. Many college mathematics professors are guys and the same is true for their students. "One study showed that women accounted for 15% of students from computer science, 16% in electric technology,... Gender divides in the faculty were similar" (Cukier). There are not many women who have made an impact on the mathematics society as well as the amount of men. A person can ramble off titles like Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Pythagoras of Samos, along with Jean-François Niceron. Where are the ladies mathematicians? This paper will analyze the lives of women who've made an effect on the world of mathematics. There could be many more men in the business of math however the girls who've made contributions have to be seen as equals. Three women who have made an effect include Mary Fairfax Somerville, Maria Gaetana Agnesi and Charlotte Angas Scott. Mary Fairfax Somerville was created on December 26, 1780 to a wealthy family of a vice admiral in the British Navy. While growing up she recieved little formal instruction. The one year that she spent at a boarding school for women in Musselburgh, she endured a life full of principles and since miserable. Mary became interested in math while reading a women's fashion magnize. She noticed symbols from the magazine which she had not noticed earlier and asked her brother's mentor about the symbols. She convinced him to purchase some mathematics for her to get futher examination. Her research in mathematics didn't go further then this until later she married and her husband died, leaving her great economic.
