In the book Black Lady, we see many black folks in the south dealing with numerous hardships. Among the most obvious problems for blacks seemed to function as "Jim Crow" laws. These laws withheld blacks from society, dividing them apart from whites and which makes it very hard for them to survive a even near regular life. Black people could not express their own ideas at all. They had to call all white guys "sirs" and most of white girls "ma’am". They couldn't act the slightest little superior to whites. It was nearly impossible for black folks to produce an adequate living from the south, and they also had to take the abuse dealt with them by he whites without so much as attempting ant resistance. Blacks in the south also had to take care of the separation aspects of this "Jim crow" legislation. They needed to sit in the back of the buses, so they had to use separate water fountains and baths, they have been looked upon just as they had some sort of illness. These are simply a few of these "Jim Crow" laws which the black people had to take care of. Richard wasn't the only one in this publication dealing with racism. All the folks around him were also dealing with this also, friends co-workers and family needed to confront the challenges of a racist environment. Through the novel we see the following other folks addressing the issues of an extremely racist society. We also see how each individual in Richards life deals with it differently. There are a few individuals and insience which stick out in my mind particularly. The primary one would have to be an incident with Shorty. Shorty has coped with racism his entire life, and he has learned to deal with it as he's grown. We see a Excellent example of the way Shorty Bargains on page 269Shorty has been faced with the problem of no money, like lots of other southern blacks were, and we see that he is willing to do anything for any Quantity of money. " It is possible to kick me in the ass for a few" (269,wright) As this occurs Richard witnesses the whole thing and we can see that he's quite disappointed at how Shorty coped with the situation. He can't understand how he could place himself in that Sort of degrading position, and Shorty simply replies. " However, a quarter can not cover what he did to you!"
