Tradition is the Guide of those Ignorant in The Lottery In "The Lottery" writer Shirley Jackson requires us into a location in which a convention is passed down generation after generation. However, through time, the "lottery" has lost any substantial meaning and also the villagers follow tradition without even understanding why the tradition exists. In this short narrative, a lottery has been held each June 26th of each year. The lottery includes every man of each household to choose a bit of paper out of a box. 1 family are the "chosen" family, which means that each member of their household will subsequently pick another bit of paper from the box. Ultimately, only 1 person is going to be the ultimate "winner." They will be the person who is stoned to death, along with the townspeople will be the one's to perform this ritual, even though no one is sure why they actually do this each and every year. This blind after the past traditions direct the reader to find a universal truth, "Tradition is the direct of the ignorant." Ignorance means lacking knowledge or being oblivious, and the ignorance of the townspeople is shown throughout the whole narrative. When told by Mr. Adams, "that over in the north village they're talking of giving up the lottery" (236), Old Man Warner states, "'There has always been a lottery" (236). Within this statement, the reader finds that the most idiotic of explanations for doing this. That, however, appears normal for the community. Every time a person has been questioned about the reason why they do something uncommon, their typical answer is something along the lines of "Because I do it all of the time." This shows ignorance on their part because they cannot even back up what they do using a valid reason, just like the townspeople in this narrative. Anot...
