Analysis of Hemingway's Narrative Technique as a Short- Story Writer For Several Years, the narrative method of Hemingway has been under debate. Writers before he'd achieved roles that bear the characteristics of the contemporary short story, and many of their works could stand now, together with people of Hemingway and of authors like Faulkner, as agent short stories of contemporary times. What distinguishes Hemingway both out of his predecessors and out of his contemporaries, however, is that the theory he produces to deal with the challenge of spatial limitation which every short story writer must face: how does he say more than his space really permits him to state? The principle of this iceberg, since the theory is called by Hemingway, leaves distinctive imprints on his short stories: a trimmed, spare style, thoughtful presentation of actions and observations, deep reliance on dramatic dialogue, and a pattern of connection extending backward and forwards between the numerous stories. Due to the above, it is helpful to have some understanding of his theory. In Death in the day, Hemingway (1932,191) points out that however great a term or a simile a author may have, he's spoiling his workout of egotism when he puts it in where it is not absolutely necessary. The form of a work, according to Hemingway, ought to be created out of experience, and no intruding elements ought to be permitted to feign that kind and betray that experience. As a result, all which may be dispersed with should be pruned off: convention, embellishment, rhetoric. It's this tendency of writing that has brought Hemingway admiration as well as criticism, but it is clear that the author understood what he was doing when he himself commented on his aim: I always try to write on the principle of the iceberg.
