In the tiny, desolate city of Starkfield, Massachusetts, Ethan Frome lives a complete life of poverty. Not merely does he live hopelessly, but “he was a prisoner forever” to the economy (Ammons 2). A engineer from beyond town narrates the start of the whole story. He evolves a curiosity towards Ethan Frome and the smash-up that he hears about in parts and bits. Later, due to an awful winter storm that caused the snow itself to appear like “part of the thickening darkness, to be the wintertime night itself descending on us layer by layer” (Wharton 20), the narrator is forced to remain the night time at Frome’s. As he enters the unfamiliar house, the whole story flashes back again twenty-four years to Ethan Frome’s young existence. Living out his life with Zenobia Frome, his hypochondriac of a wife whom he will not love, Ethan has nowhere to carefully turn for a look into happiness.
