In The Red Badge of Courage, Stephen Crane reveals the development of a young man, Henry, who is affected by many other characters. The year was 1862 and it had been the period of the Civil War. '' The story starts at nighttime on a cold morning once the military was resting in their pajamas, bunks, and around the campfires. Since Jim Conklin, who later becomes known as the tall soldier, hammering his shirt in the river, he hears a rumor concerning the regiment. He rushes to inform his comrades that the regiment will proceed the following day. Following the loud soldier, Wilson, finds this rumor, '' he argues with Jim that it is a liar. While each one of the rumors are dispersing, the major character Henry is simply standing on the side watching and listening. . Henry then begins to think about how his response to fighting in conflict is. A flashback to when he first enlisted against his motherвЂ™s wishes occurs to him. He recalls tales of bloody and glorious wars of times ago. Henry believed that the war was a brave adventure. During that time, people lived a very simple life, mostly according to growing and harvesting plants. The youth also recalls his motherвЂ™s lecture before he left for war, even вЂњYou watch out Henry and take good care of your self in this battling business. You watch out and take good care of yourselfвЂќ (pg.5). His mother warned him about caring for himself and staying away from bad companions. His motherвЂ™s part represents the realities of war due to the time where this narrative takes place. It is difficult to understand if she was uneducated or not.
