Two traveling dairies or nikki stand out in Japanese traditional literature; both share the same literary designation, but they come from drastically different time periods. The first journal Tosa nikki was composed in 936, the next journal Oku no hosomuchi was written beginning in 1689 and finally finished in 1702. Both authors had a goal for their writing, and shared their thoughts with all the Western people; however different could two men of the exact same culture be? Ki no Tsurayuki wrote his travel journal the Tosa Nikki during the Heian period when preparing and journeying in the Tosa Province (modern day Kochi Prefecture) into the capital city of Kyoto. This trip was on the north and was created primarily by sea; this was noteworthy because the Japanese were legendarily poor sailors. Kyoto was the home of the emperor who during the Heian period was believed to be descended from the gods. Kyoto was not just Ki no more Tsurayuki’s home, but also the centre of the world at that time. Men and women were sent away from the city but always would like to go back. In contrast to this Tosa Nikki, Oku no hosomichi from Matsuo Bashō (previously known as Matsuo Kinsaku) was composed much later during the Edo period and has been about a property journey made on foot. Despite the dangers of water traveling Bashō’s journey had its own perils like bandits and bad trails. Whatever the kind of journey and also the time period, one of those most unexpected differences between the Tosa Nikki and Oku no hosomichi was the direction the writers were traveling. I mentioned in that Ki no Tsurayuki was journeying home, to the center of earth in the time, Kyoto.
