Life from the 1930's for Americans was quite bewildering since the nation was just coming out of the Red Scare. Aldous Huxley published a dystopian book, Brave New World, where the literary "controllers" in the novel could easily control the ignorance of individuals through conditioning and drugs. The government used the medication soma for a way to generate everyone high and agree to anything the hierarchy needed. Taking soma makes everyone crave it even more because it is an addictive drug. Within six years, scientists analyzed the drug in order that there would be no side effects except one- the people would crave the medication even more (Hochman; Napierkowski; Stanley). Throughout the entire year of 1919, fear of communism improved greatly when the Boston Police and steel and coal employees went on strike. Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer, who was working for President Woodrow Wilson, considered that communism was carrying within the United States through World War I (Trueman; "The"). Educators, companies, and governments have tried to influence the public through propaganda much like the shadow authorities in Brave New World. Propaganda tells the public what it wants to hear. Telling people what they want to listen distorts their decisions. Propaganda, then, distorts the public's conclusions so the propagandists can get what they want. What is propaganda? Propaganda is a lot more of a monitoring of their group mind as opposed to a science examined in a laboratory with information. The accuracy of the science cannot be measured because the components of the situation will always be beyond anybody's control.
