Union in William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew At the time Shakespeare wrote The Taming of the Shrew that the idealistics and attitudes to not only marriage, but also girls were of an entirely different nature. A woman would have had to be married to somebody with the same social standing. The guy would indeed must be rich and supply a secure and safe future. Marriage was established around social standings, money, trade and also a means to generate an alliance.
