"Barbie Doll" by Marge Piercy and " David Talamentez on the Last Day of Second Grade" by Rosemary Catacalos are two poems which reveal a special view into society and the roles society expects individuals to fulfill. Sometimes those expectations may lead people to take extreme measures or even trigger defiance in some folks. The irony of this is that it appears the more people push people to be what society wants the more it drives them to become what they do not need. Back in "David Talamentez" (lines 57-59) "finished with automobiles. On every single page David Talamantez has spanned out the educators reddish numbers and composed in giant letters, blue ink, Yes! David, yes!" All throughout the poem it is his educators who will not take him for who he is (13-17). "from the gutter and melts toward home. David Talamantez believes birds are warm blooded, the way they are quick in the atmosphere and give out long strings of complicated music, different all of the time, not like dogs and cats.
