During the 1950s, mass media influenced society in a way that had never been done before. It seemed that when one took a look to the typical American home, we might look back and realize how strong of an effect the American citizens were beneath. There was mom in the kitchen, daddy's watching TV along with his son; and his little girl is in her room playing with her Barbies. But would you ever stop to consider of the consequences of everybody's activities in this situation? Perhaps it's the patriarchal attitude promoted on television that could have led to at least a fraction of those 960,000 domestic violence events that happened this year, or maybe staring at Barbie's biased dimensions is why 81 percent of the 10 year olds today are afraid of being "obese". The 1950s stay-at-home mom, usually did not have a job and would not get a divorce simply because she could not afford to. The mentality of just "dealing with it" might have been passed on through generations leading to the four deaths today due to domestic abuse.2 Hence possibly the 1950s had a good deal more influence over us than we thought. The media of the 1950s slowly and quietly led us to globe we have now. By TV shows like I Love Lucy and Leave it to Beaver, strong man characters were portrayed, while women normally took on the part of "damsels in distress". Merchandise advertisements encouraged women to take pride in their kitchen by decorating it with their goods. Media came in and influenced everyone in unbelievable ways and it picked the best time to do so. Suddenly women were more poor than ever; media came through and closed women who planned to alter the image of the typical broad down.
