The 1880s proved to be a period of change to America. High unemployment levels and low salaries in many cities forced several to look to new opportunities in towns and elsewhere. This comprised the newly enlarged west. From the 1880s Kansas had three dominating teams- railroad businesses, farmers, and cowboys. All three dealt with individual triumphs and struggles when growing the West and especially Kansas in the later portion of this 19th century. Railroads spent most of the 1880s concerned with previous legislation, farmers worried about property allotment and residing on the Plains. Cowboys also worried about land allotment and living. The anxieties of the previous two created a tension between them but in the end survival of one depended on the survival of the other. Insuring their location in history, the 3 groups collectively made the expansion of the West possible and forever changed the face of Kansas. The 1880s has been a period of considerable change for Kansas and railroads, that were very important to the growth of Kansas. As many historians state “rails didn’t build Kansas City, however they carried virtually all that did” (Worley 1). While the majority of the legislation that changed the railroads had taken place at some point prior to the time period, it was now coming full swing and also impacting the settlers today. In May of 1854, the Kansas- Nebraska Act was passed. Though mostly known for repealing the Missouri Compromise it also gave “the railroads the best to construct a railway network from Chicago to the Pacific Coast” (Kansas- Nebraska Act 1).
