What is an estuary? An Estuary and their neighboring wetlands are big bodies of water where the river meets the ocean. Estuaries are still home to numerous plants and animals that have adapted to the brackish water (a mixture of fresh water and seawater). I grew up using the longest lake in Florida, in my backyard, The St. Johns River. This river is similar to many others, among the few rivers which flow northward. The lake is 500 km long, beginning from Indian River County, through the majority of neighboring Florida, to finally flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. However, that the St. Johns River is really a river, it forms an estuary when the Atlantic Ocean Tides cause seawater to enter the mouth of the St. Johns River. Because the river is, quite long it is okay to mention that part of it forms an estuary and that section has been in my back yard, Jacksonville, Florida. The history Approximately 100,000 years back, the St. Johns River shaped following property climbed along the shore and trapped a portion of the sea inland. The river didn't take on the seas present until about 5,000 years back, after the end of the ice age and the sea started to rise. The lake is youthful just about 5,000 years old. The hydrological cycle of these arid peninsula transformed, leading to rains which fed the outside flow of the St. Johns and its own underground spring. Before European settlers arrived to Florida, it had been home to many Native Americans, the Timucaun Indians are the known in Jacksonville. The Geology The St. Johns River flows south to north; the southern part of the river flows upstream, whereas the northern area of the river flow downstream.
