Topic: Discuss American representations of Chinese ladies in the context of stereotypical, Orientalist views of Asian women (e. g. , the Puccini opera, Madame Butterfly, mail-order bride firms, representations of Asian ladies in Hollywood/Western movies, e. g. , as submissive housewives, Suzie Wongs, Dragon Gals).
Western have viewed Asia differently in various period. Asian women are also viewed differently. I'll discuss the stereotype of Asian women first, but most in the newspaper I am going to discuss Chinese language women. Secondly, I will list some examples from videos and literature.
Stereotype is a extensively held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular kind of person or thing. . Westerners usually viewed Asian women as submissive housewives, dragon women and Geisha young girls.
Dragon Female is a stereotype describing Chinese women. A dragon lady is strong, imperious and full of secrets. The word was initially used to describe a fiction persona in Milton Caniff's comic remove Terry and the Pirates who was performed by an Chinese celebrity - Anna May Wong, and later on, a film called Child of the Dragon was made and it spoken more about Dragon Ladies, and the character was also played out by Anna May Wong. Westerner always see Anna May Wong as a Dragon Woman, we can easily see that from one of her movies, Piccadilly, which she performed a Chinese party lady called Shosho who was deeply in love with a white man who called Valentine. Within the movie, there was another dance young lady called Mabel but all the sexy scene is played by Anna May Wong, even the poster is she posing naked at the top. Shosho is a strong girl. She falls deeply in love with Valentine even though at that time, romantic relationship between different races is prohibited. She is aware the risk that she may be seemed down, but she still begins the relationship with Valentine, that proves that she actually is a really strong female. Also, Shosho is imperious. When Mable who is also deeply in love with Valentine come to find her concerning convince her that Valentine is too old for her and have her to leave Valentine, Shosho replies that it's Mable too old for him. From this script, we can easily see that Shosho is actually imperious as she mocks Mable immediately. Besides, Shosho is packed with secrets. Valentine is deeply in love with her because of her mystical. He will not know anything about her and when he involves Shosho's house and see her wearing incredible Chinese costumes, he loves her more. The movie also just shows Shosho 's name and her boyfriend - Jim, besides that, we know nothing about Shosho such as why does she residing in London, just how many family members does indeed she have or what's her real name. This demonstrates Shosho is full of secrets.
Shosho is referred to as a Dragon Woman as she actually is strong, imperious and packed with secrets, and the character is a Chinese language and also played out by a Chinese actress. Hence, we can conclude that Westerners always see Chinese language women as Dragon Gals and even in today, Westerners still see Chinese women as Dragon Girls since there is a Television set series called Ally McBeal and in the series, there's a personality called Ling Woo who's a classic stereotype of Dragon Girl and is played out by an Asian actress Lucy Liu.
Secondly, Westerners think Chinese language women are submissive. Submissive means always willing to follow someone and never disagreeing with them, even if they're unkind for you. A Submissive housewife is cling to her family and will always follow to her family. Suzie Wong from the movie "The World Of Suzie Wong" is one of the exemplory case of submissive housewife. Suzie Wong is a prostitute in Nam Kok Hotel and she fits Robert, an American painter, on the ferry. When Suzie first fulfilled Robert, she launched herself as a wealthy virgin liked by her dad. Her introduction implies that profound down in her center, she still desire to be pure and be loved, she does not want to sell her body but there is absolutely no other way to avoid it. She has to have good care of her baby so that she needs plenty of money. She becomes a prostitute totally because of her baby. The daddy of the infant abandons them but Suzie does not abandon the baby and take the whole responsibility to improve the child. This shows that Suzie is a submissive woman. Also, when she is deeply in love with Robert, one time she got hit by a Britain sailor but she instructs her good friend that she received strike by Robert. In her judgment, got hit by her man means that he is in love with her, and she has asked Robert, more often than once, going to her. This means if Robert do struck her, she still will not leave Robert because she is willing to obey Robert even he's unkind to her, which is the exactly meaning of submissive. Furthermore, Suzie once became somebody's sweetheart but she still did not leave that guy even she did not love him. The man she adores is Robert but in order to get Robert jealous, she became someone's partner. She didn't love that man but she was not the main one who concluded this romantic relationship. She would marry that person but that man broke up with her since he wished to get back with his wife. With this relationship, Suzie pays off lots of work since she will not love that man and she actually is trying her better to love him only because she is his girlfriend. At the end of the movie, Robert asks Suzie to marry him, and Suzie replies "I am going to stick with you until you say Suzie, disappear completely. " This demonstrates if Suzie is someone's lover, she will not leave him even she will not love him, and Suzie is submissive to her boyfriend and her love, she'll not leave until someone explains to her going away. She actually is totally follow her boyfriend. This movie is a Hollywood movie, so the character Suzie Wong is manufactured out of the view of Westerners. Therefore, we can say that Suzie Wong is an exemplory case of submissive housewives.
Another example of submissive housewives is Madame Butterfly. Madame Butterfly can be an opera by an Italian article writer, so Madame Butterfly is a view of Asian women from the American. Madame Butterfly is approximately the sad storyline of a woman called Cio-Cio San. She actually is a Geisha and she is in love with an American officer called Pinkerton. Cio-Cio San is hitched to Pinkerton but down the road Pinkerton dates back to America and marry an American girl, but nonetheless, Cio-Cio San believes that Pinkerton will get back again with her again. However, realizing that he will not keep coming back makes Cio-Cio San very sad. Pinkerton will not know Cio-Cio San has given labor and birth to his kid and when he knows that, he needs to get his child back again. Finally, Cio-Cio San commits suicide as she seems desperate about Pinkerton. That is a very unfortunate story but it can show that Madame Butterfly is submissive. While she was waiting for Pinkerton, there are other people who purpose to her but she refuses all since she actually is wedded to Pinkerton and she feels that a married girl shall not recognize other man's proposal. Also, when she understands that Pinkerton had hitched an American female, she just gets astonished but not angry, and eventually she forgives him as she always wanted him back. Each one of these show that Cio-Cio San is a submissive housewife that she obeys to Pinkerton even he has wedded an other woman or left behind her. He returning is just to take his son back, there is absolutely no love from him to Madame Butterfly. Eventually, Madame Butterfly decides to get rid of her life because of sadness. However, I really believe Madame Butterfly is a lovely girl and even Pinkerton will not love her anymore, there will still be many guys fascinated by her and even propose to her. So, actually Madame Butterfly can choose another life if she choose to not love Pinkerton any further, but she is an Asian girl, she is supposed to be submissive from american 's point of view, so the copy writer writes her dedicated suicide because she actually is supposed to love that man her very existence and will not love another man easily.
From Madame Butterfly, we can also note that Westerners thinks Asian women are Geisha girls. Madame Butterfly is a Geisha and there is also a recent Hollywood movie called "Stories of your Geisha". Geisha are traditional, feminine Japanese entertainers who perform different Japanese arts like classical music and dance. Most of the Geisha from the movie "Memories of a Geisha" is played by Asian women which movie is made by westerners so this film is truly a view of Asian women from the Western world. Westerners think Asian women as Geisha who are proficient at dancing and performing. Chinese language women are good at traditional dance and singing and are also Japanese women. It includes the original beauty of a female so Geisha is one of the stereotype of Asian women since Westerners usually think that Asian women are extremely beautiful when they dress customarily.
Nowadays, Westerners view Asian women in another way. They think almost all of the Asian women know Martial Art. We can notice that in different mass media such as videos and TV series, and also we have a famous kung-fu celeb - Michelle Yeoh. She has played a number of characters but almost all of them are kung-fu related, for example, her persona in the movie "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor". Besides Michelle Yeoh, Maggie Q is also an example. She plays the main role in the TV series called "Nikita". She takes on Nikita who is a spy and assassin in the series. A spy and assassin means there are several kung-fu scene plus they choose an Asian actress because they think an Asian girl ought to know kung-fu and an Asian girl fighting is more desirable than a white woman struggling with since Asian women are created to try out kung-fu well, and one more example is Lucy Liu in "Charlie's Angels". She is a detective who retrieves taken voice-ID software using martial arts. She is the only person Angel who's Asian, the other two Angels are Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz who are world known white stars. Why doesn't the three Angels all be white people? Why does there need an Asian female? The answer is evident. It is because Westerners think Asian people are more suitable for preventing and their kung-fu are more practical than white people. Therefore, we can see that knowing fighting techinques is also one of the stereotype of Asian women nowadays.
To summarize, Asian women have different kinds of stereotype - as submissive housewives, as Dragon Females, as Geisha so when women knowing fighting techinques. Submissive housewives means a female will obey to her boyfriend or hubby no subject how her partner or husband treat her, even her boyfriend or husband hit her or take action to hurt her, they'll be with them, and they'll leave only if their boyfriends or husbands told them to disappear completely, if not, they will be with them permanently and wait for them permanently. The examples of submissive housewives are Suzie Wong and Madame Butterfly. Dragon Females means strong, imperious women and women that packed with secret. They may be sexy, inexplicable and brave enough to fight if someone is taking their things away. The example of Dragon Women is Anna May Wong. Geisha does not only mean female Japanese performing traditional music and boogie, but also indicate traditional female performing and dancing, so here this means the potential to be a Geisha but not the Geisha herself. The exemplory case of Geisha females is also Madame Butterfly. Lastly, women know kung-fu is a nowadays stereotype as we can see many Asian actress are playing a job that is aware kung-fu in many movies.
