Types of learning ideas and learning styles

The purpose of this essay is to put together the episode of learning that I have already been involved, I am going to discuss how different types of learning theories and learning styles enlightened to develop my knowledge, it also reflect and evaluate the kind of strategies that is used within the episode of learning and it'll discuss the implications in relation to my future role as a register nurse.

In accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct and Performance NMC (2008) Patient information must be cured as confidential and should only be utilized for the purpose intended for to keep confidentiality. Therefore the patient's name, clinic and the learning facilitator name will be disclosed.

Education can be an activity undertaken or initiated by a number of agents that was created to impact changes in the knowledge, skill, and behaviour of individuals, categories or communities. The word emphasizes the educator, the agent of change who reveals stimuli and reinforcement for learning and designs activities to cause change (Malcolm et. al 2005). The word learning, by contrast, emphasizes the person in whom the change occurs or is expected to take place. Learning is the function or process by which behavioural change, knowledge, skills and behaviour are attained (Boyd, et al. 1980) therefore learning is not merely attending a school or reading books it is focused on changing behaviours and behaviour, reflecting what has been educated by practicing.

When I was doing my placement in the medical ward my coach taught me how to handle an electrocardiogram (ECG) when she showed me the very first time I had been very puzzled and thinking how I will know which leads will where after she's done the procedure on the patient she describe everything detail by detail, there was also a diagram as a guide on the device showing how and where to adhere the leads. After viewing her carrying out the task on many patient 1 day she asked me to carry out the task on a patient even though I observed her doing it so many times but I had formed no confidence to do it however, she inspired me and also said she'll be there to help me completely, as regular I create myself to my patient and ask his consent to carry out the procedure and pull the curtains to respect patient dignity, regarding to NMC (2008) obtain consent before you give any treatment or attention and it also says that people must respect patients dignity. She see me and perfect my mistakes which was protecting against me from repeating the same blunders again because the way she corrected me she didn't just say that I had been wrong, she clarify everything easily take action in the wrong way that will give me the wrong reading which can affect patient treatment, she also suggested me to learn about the heart and soul as well as how to determine patients with center problem and when a new patient admits to the ward what type of assessment we should perform? And she asks me why? So I learnt a lot from her.

In this bout of learning various learning ideas has been added in order to build up my knowledge. From public learning theory behaviourism was the first one I used relating to Pritchard (2005) defining behaviourism is a theory learning concentrating on observable behaviours and discounting any mental activity.

Learning is the acquisition of new behavior. I believe I learn through observing others behaviour, behaviour, and outcomes of those behaviours. Corresponding to Bandura (1977) most real human behaviour is discovered observationally through modelling. From watching others, one forms a concept of how new behaviours are performed, and on later situations this coded information serves as a guide for action. By observing my mentor for so often while she was undertaking the procedure of ECG I could remember the task detail by detail. However, Bandura (1977) claim that people cannot learn much by observation unless they attend to and perceive effectively, the significant future of the modelled behaviour, which is right because easily was not get the opportunity to practice what I see, it iseasy to neglect all about it therefore i found it very useful and I completely understood when I did the procedure by myself rather than observing it all enough time.

Working with and observing a mentor enables students, through a process of reflection, to internalise their mentor's behavior and build on earlier knowledge and experience (Schon, 1987). My coach is a good role model, she react professionally she advocate on her behalf patients best of interest and she dose follow the hospital rules and regulations in order to provide the best treatment and she likewise have a good communication skills with the multidisciplinary groups regarding to the patients that she is looking after so I learnt a lot from her that I am going to continue to build it up on my future placements, Role modelling is a process that allows students to learn new behaviours with no trial and error of doing things for themselves (Bandura, 1977). The benefits associated with role modelling lay in the opportunities for students to utilize experienced and educated practitioners (Spouse, 1998). Therefore my mentor teaches me every single thing that she is aware and she distributed her experience with me by giving me the opportunities to utilize her at all the time and she always screen my progression anything that I need to improve she advices me to jot down my action plan and she check me easily fulfilled them.

According to Rogers(1993) Individuals want to learn and do so best when they feel absolve to share and choose their own route, My coach was professionally friendly, trusting, mutually respectful, informal, warm, collaborative and supportive openness that allows me to do best and find out quickly. When they are able to do this, mentors fulfil a dual role of tutor and learning facilitator and they must help their students to recognize what direction learning should take and accomplish the best conditions because of this that occurs, (Rogers, 1983). Matching to Hartley and Ellis (2000) The mentor must create rely upon an atmosphere where in fact the scholar can ask questions widely without being foolish, therefore my mentor when she desires to describe things she always take me to the side and we discuss everything she actually is open Personally i think comfortable to ask her any questions. Also NMC (2008) you have a obligation to help students of nursing, midwifery and specialist community general public health nursing as well as others to develop their competence. You may have a responsibility to deliver care based on current facts, best practice and, where satisfactory, validated research when it is available.

Pratt(1988) recognize that most learning encounters are highly situational, and that a learner may show completely different behaviours in different learning situation, for example it is completely likely that a learner may be highly self-confident and self aimed in one world of learning but very reliant and unsure in another. Because of the different learning opportunities from being reliant I are more self-assured on doing ECG, by reading and practicing helps me to build up my knowledge. My mentor was urged me and clarify things that I didn't know and she answer any question i ask her without having to be judgemental, so we had a good mentor and student marriage.

According to Rogers (1983) the humanists theorist, the key factors in motivating learning is the quality of the relationship between the learner and the professor, each learner must be respected and appreciated for who and what she is, he also refer to that a romantic relationship of trust must be built between the tutor and the learner unconditional positive respect. My mentor showed positive interest to tech me which makes me feel respected and respected it is therefore motivating me to learn more and also to be capable. Operant fitness is a method of learning that occurs through rewards and punishments for behavior. Through operant conditioning, an association is manufactured between behaviour and a result for that behavior Reinforcement is the main element element, in Skinner (1971) a reinforce is anything that strengthens the desired response. Maybe it's verbal compliment, a good class or a sense of increased accomplishment or satisfaction. Each and every time after I have done the ECG treatment my mentor provides me positive responses that urged me to do it more regularly and it also offers me the confident which i needed. According to Malcolm (2005) the Andragogical Model in adult learners has a self-concept to be responsible for their own decisions, because of their own lives. Ones they arrived at that self-concept, they develop a deep psychological have to be seen by others and cared for by others to be capable of

As I am an adult learner I really know what I have to learn and move towards independently, I have my own duties for my own learning. Having positive feedback and encouragement from my mentor does motivate me to learn all new things. Reflecting upon this experience the good thing going well is knowing my learning style Relating to Honey and Mumford (1986) we have to have the ability to adopt one of four different styles in order to complete any given learning activity satisfactorily which are activists, reflectors, theorists and pragmatists, as I am a reflector, I like to stand back and look at situations from different perspectives before arriving to conclusion to carry out any procedure or new things, so before I perform the ECG I use every chance to observe my coach and other nurses carrying it out, I take time to read about it and I have did research making me to have the confident to handle the ECG by my very own on any patient. Relating to NMC (2008) maintain your professional knowledge and

competence you must keep your skills and knowledge up to date throughout

our working life. Specifically, you should participate regularly in learning activities that develop your competence and performance.

Knowing my learning style also helped me to build up my knowledge. For my future

role as a registrant nurse I could have the ability to carry out any techniques effectively because as I am a reflector I really do research and acquire as much information to do any types of procedures accurately, corresponding to Pritchard (2005) the strength of reflectors is their painstaking data collection and its subsequent analysis, that will happen before any bottom line is come to. I am also a visual learner I learn fast by seeing I am good at

reading maps, graphs and any exhibits, in this specific learning the diagram on the ECG machine which ultimately shows how to carry out the procedure helps me to do my job quick and I can relate it with what I read before gives me a complete understanding on what I am doing, in relating to my future role it is important to be able to build relationships new solutions, in healthcare settings there are a great number of different machines that we are using, in emergency situation it's good to do something fast how that machine is working just only by reading the manual or carrying out a diagram or a poster exhibiting how to operate it. Regarding to NMC (2008) you'll want the knowledge and skills for effective and safe practice when working without direct supervision.

The use of charts on the ECG machine which shows all the concepts of the lesson which helps me be able to capture information as I notice from our discussions and from the presentations provided by my mentor and other nurses. The charts are operating as visual aids that are observable. This can help me to have the ability to observe the actual charts have stressed on and l achieve great knowledge by watching the charts as a set of required example. Matching to Western world, Clark and Jasper (2007) provide students with best opportunity for success during the assessment process it is vital to ensure they have a possible workload for his or her stage of education that can allow them to learn as well as to work therefore my mentor was supplying me every opportunities to learn and to reflect what I learned by doing and she evaluate me giving me research and by requesting me questions which does indeed building up my self-assurance.

In conclusion, having the knowledge of the various type of ideas help me to understand the practice better, creating a mentor who encourage and motivating me to practice also give me the positive to use theory directly into practice. The use of different learning strategies also met my learning style. I learned quite of knowing patients learning style which will make it easier to allow them to understand their condition or treatment better and. For my future role as a register nurse I can apply my knowledge to do health promotion. As a student nurse I will continue to use my learning styles in both theory and practice.
