Syvai and Nel as Soulmates in Toni Morrison's Sula

In examining the two unique characters of Nel (Wright) Greene and Sula Peace from Toni Morrison's Syvai, a unique individual soul comes forth from the two women. This soul takes into account good, negative, and gray area qualities. That they gray place qualities will be needed mainly because, while Nel exhibits many stereotypical "good" qualities than Sula, the stereotypes of good and awful don't in shape the definition completely. Nel and Sula combined create a sort of ying and yang soul, each 50 percent including a few of the other half. While at the times the 2 women happen to be polar opposites of one another in standpoint, they get to their thoughts with the help of the other. The two characters want each other to be able to exist towards the extent that they can become "two throats and one eye" (Morrison 2167). A physical sort of how connected the two women are is observed when they line up head to head creating a straight, ongoing, and complete line (2124).

The highest influence on the growing lady is her mother, and in some cases, like Syvai, her granny. In order to fully understand the connection between Nel and Sula, one must examine who and what all their mothers had been and what traits and beliefs they handed down with their daughters. Nel's mother, Helene, sought to show her child the ways as a stereotypical "good woman, inch a supporting wife and a caring mother. For instance to her little girl, Helene took great satisfaction in increasing Nel and found in her "more enjoyment purpose than she acquired ever wished to find" in her life (2105).
